Start with coverage and consistency
Strength training should give the main muscle groups regular work. Adults are generally advised to do strengthening on at least two days a week. The exercise choices and amount need to suit your experience, ability and health.
The ACSM’s 2026 evidence review emphasises regular training and gradual progression. Bodyweight exercises, bands and home sessions can be useful; elaborate equipment and training to complete failure are not requirements for every healthy adult.
Write down what would make the next session comparable
Record the exercise, resistance, repetitions and sets, plus a short note about control or discomfort. Keep the exercise setup consistent enough to tell whether performance changed.
A heavier weight with a shorter movement or altered technique is not a clean comparison. If you are learning an exercise, instruction and comfortable control matter more than adding load.
Use a simple training log
| Record | Example entry | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exercise and setup | Chair rise; same chair height | Keeps the task comparable |
| Work completed | Two sets of eight controlled repetitions | Shows what you actually did |
| Resistance | Bodyweight or the band used | Prevents guessing at the next session |
| Response | Last repetitions challenging; no unusual pain | Helps judge whether to repeat or adjust |
Progress one part when you are ready
Repeat the routine until you can perform it as intended. Then consider a small change to repetitions, resistance or sets, rather than increasing everything together. Allow recovery between demanding sessions.
Ask for suitable instruction if technique is uncertain or a health condition affects training. Pain or a sharp loss of control is a reason to stop and reassess. Your next useful step may be repeating the same plan well.
